Charles (Chuck) Gumbiner started his own accounting firm in 1950, right out of college. A few years later Louis (Lou) Savett joined the Gumbiner firm as an accountant. Shortly after, however, Lou left for Canada for a few years to manage his family’s business. In the early 1960s Lou returned to work with Chuck and they both decided to grow the firm that is now known as Gumbiner Savett Inc. Their focus was on becoming part of the business community and providing hands-on client service.
Housed in an office in the Hollywood area for many years, the firm moved to its current Santa Monica location – formerly occupied by a tobacco company with a tobacco warehouse – in the late 1980s. At that time, the firm had a staff of approximately 23 total employees. Although the new offices were sizable for the existing firm, their vision was to serve the Southern California community and to continue to grow.
In the early 1990s, after several acquisitions and a few name changes, the firm had grown to a size where the entire warehouse space could be used. In this process GS had become a large local accounting firm serving clients up and down the California coast, working with businesses that mirrored the state’s business economy.
Today the firm is home to over 100 staffers with clients from local, national and international arenas. However, GS continues to maintain the client focus of our founders and has not lost sight of the importance of being a friend and advisor, while upholding the ethics of the accounting profession.
